Echoes of Switzerland in the Yarra Valley

The Valais Blacknose Sheep heralds from the Valais canton, a jewel of Switzerland, known for its beautiful landscapes and rich breeding history. These sheep, akin to the icons of Zurich, Zermatt, and Crans Montana, bring the essence of Swiss alpine heritage to the Yarra Valley, blending seamlessly with the region's own Swiss heritage.

The Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, holds a rich tapestry of Swiss history, dating back to the mid-19th century when Swiss settlers first immigrated  to  the region. Notably, the Swiss influence flourished in areas like Yering, when Sophie, the Swiss wife of the first Governor of Victoria, Charles La Trobe, encouraged  families from Neuchâtel in Switzerland, including   the brother’s Hubert, Paul de Castella and Baron de Pury, to immigrate to Victoria. These families settled around Yering, Yarra Glen and Healesville and were instrumental in developing the Yarra Valley's now-celebrated wine industry, founding esteemed wineries like Chateau Yering, Yeringberg, and St Hubert’s. Their legacy has imbued the Yarra Valley with a distinctive Swiss character, merging European viticultural practices with the Australian landscape, and fostering a cultural and agricultural bond that endures to this day. This Swiss heritage continues to be celebrated in the Yarra Valley, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation that shapes the region's identity and community.
